HEIRLOOM PUMPKINS are heritage cultivated varieties of WINTER SQUASH that tend to have an elegant appearance and flesh that is well-suited to cooking. Heirloom pumpkins come in many different colors, although shades tend to be more muted than modern carving-type pumpkins. Many popular heirloom pumpkin varieties have been cultivated for over a hundred years, with seeds passed down through generations of pumpkin lovers.
"PUMPKIN" is merely a term of convenience, for there are only squash. The common distinction that is made between the two is not based on botanical characteristics as we now understand them. But pumpkins are really a type of squash.
FAIRYTALE pumpkin, also known as Musquée de Provence, is a medium-large tan-colored French heirloom pumpkin cultivar. These pumpkins have deep ribs all around the pumpkin, giving them a very full appearance. Fairytale Pumpkins are great for baking because of the fine-grained orange flesh of the pumpkin, and also make for festive autumn decor. Decorative. Late maturity. Long storage. LONG ISLAND CHEESE Squash/Pumpkin is a medium-sized, tan heirloom pumpkin cultivar from Long Island (NY, USA). These pumpkins have a pale pastel creamy-yellow rind, rather like a big wheel of cheese. Each pumpkin weighs in the range of 6-10 pounds. This variety is popular for pies and is also a great long-term storage pumpkin. This squash is an excellent keeper and can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place for 3-6 months.
NORTH GEORGIA CANDY ROASTER Rare heirloom variety. Originally cultivated by the Cherokee Indians in the Appalachian Mountains of the southeastern portion of the United States. It is still most often grown in parts of northern Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Smooth and sweet. Becomes sweeter with time. Maintains its superior eating quality up to 5 months with proper storage. Can be roasted, stuffed, or made into pie filling. Avg. weight: 8–15 lb.
JARRAHDALE PUMPKIN is a medium-large, grey-blue heirloom pumpkin variety from Australia. These are the classic “blue” heirloom pumpkins, with a slate-blue rind and deep, blocky ribs down the sides. A Jarrahdale heirloom pumpkin will typically weigh in the range of 12-18 pounds when ripe. This variety is another type that can be used for decor or for cooking (or both!).
PINK BANANA SQUASH is a large, pink, banana-shaped fruit can weigh 10-40 lbs. This variety is over 100 years old. Fine flavored, dry, sweet, orange flesh that is superbly fine tasting. Popular on the West Coast; large yields. The banana-shaped fruit turn pinkish-orange when mature and have a firm, sweet, yellow-orange flesh that is excellent for pies, baking, and canning.
QUEENSLAND BLUE PUMPKIN is a blue-grey heirloom pumpkin cultivar from Australia. The gorgeous grey-blue pumpkins have deep ribs and a flattened, almost cylindrical frame. These pumpkins store for many months due to their thick rind. Queensland Blue Pumpkins are sought after for decor, but also make a very sweet golden-colored pumpkin puree.
